We have combined some of our herbs into a nice little kit in celebration of Samhain.
Samhain translated from Irish literally means summer's end. In the old traditionally it was a celebration of the end of harvest ushering in the new year and present plenty of challenges for the coming winter.
Samhain, the fire festival marked the beginning of the dark half of the year, situated between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice.
During this time the veil between realms is very thin. It is said that the world of the gods “was believed to be made visible to humankind,” leading to supernatural tricks and trouble; ghosts of the dead and spirits from the Otherworld were thought to return to the earth during Samhain.
During this festival, the world of the gods “was believed to be made visible to humankind,” leading to supernatural tricks and trouble; ghosts of the dead and spirits from the Otherworld were also thought to return to the earth during Samhain. To pacify deities at this time, sacrifices (generally of crops and animals) are burned in bonfires; for protective measures from evil otherworldly beings and offerings were left out for other visiting mischievous spirits. Tricks and pranks are often played and blamed on fairies and spirits during this three-day period when the line between the two worlds blurred.
